Previously we’ve written that either the Republican or Democrat plans for school funding reform in Illinois — Senate Bill 1124 or Senate Bill 1, the latter still in play — would be an improvement over an abominable status quo.

But with his amendatory veto of SB1 last week, Gov. Bruce Rauner went well beyond the intent of both bills — and perhaps Illinois’ Constitution — keeping his own party members in the dark and breaking new ground that pretty much would leave stillborn any attempt to narrow the nation’s worst gap in spending between rich and poor schools.
