Tears were just below the surface as shoppers scoured aisles of back-to-school supplies Thursday at Walmart SuperCenter along Allen Road.

“I cried before I came here,” said Chandra Humphrey of Peoria, a widowed mother of three, lamenting the high cost of school supplies.

“I’ll spend at least $75 for each kid, not including shoes or a single outfit.”
