We applaud the members of the Senate who took a dramatic step forward for today’s students and students of future generations by overriding the Governor’s veto of Senate Bill 1 and rejecting changes that would deepen inequity in school districts for years to come. Now the House must override the Governor’s veto and take this historic opportunity to make SB1 law in order to ensure an equitable funding system moving forward.
For the last four years, superintendents, school board members, civil rights leaders, teachers and everyday Illinoisans have called for the General Assembly to fix the nation’s worst school funding formula. SB1 would drive dollars to the neediest districts first while taking into account the evidence of what works in the classroom. Superintendents from a cross-section of districts remain unified in support of SB1, from Lake County to Winnebago County in the north to Fayette County and Jackson County in the south, all demanding a fix to the formula.
We want to thank the members of the Senate who voted in favor of schoolchildren and our schools today.
Again, we call on the House to take brave bipartisan action and override the amendatory veto of SB1.
